What types of crowns are available?
In the past, cosmetic dentists made available metal, ceramic, and
porcelain fused to metal (PFM) crowns. Modern technology now allows
many dentists to offer all-porcelain crowns to their patients, the
more aesthetically pleasing option.
What happens during a crown procedure?
Your dentist will numb the treatment area and prepare the tooth
for the crown placement. The tooth will need to be reduced a bit
in order to fit the new crown on top. Following the tooth preparation,
the dentist will create a model of the prepared tooth, from which
a custom-fabricated crown is made. While the crown is being built,
you will need to wear a temporary crown until your final appointment.
When you return, the dentist will remove the temporary and cement
the definative crown. Some patients with extensive decay may require
a root canal before the crown placement.
How do I know if I need a crown?
A crown is a good solution for patients with broken fillings, cracks
and major decay. Crowns are necessary when a tooth is generally
broken down and fillings won't solve the problem. A crown can also
be used to restore fractured teeth or support weakened teeth.
What are the advantages of an all-porcelain crown?
Crowns of the past were either made with metal or porcelain fused
to metal, and they were very noticeable. All-porcelain crowns allow
patients the benefits of this type of smile rejuvenation without
showing obvious dental work. All-porcelain crowns look and feel
like natural teeth, and the dentist prefers to use them on front
teeth so that only we know they are not yours!
How do I care for my new crown?
You can eat normal foods, but you should try to avoid hard foods,
ice or candy that can damage dental work. Be sure to maintain good
dental health with regular cleaning and brushing.
What are the advantages of dental bonding?
Compared to other cosmetic dentistry treatments, bonding is a relatively
inexpensive option requiring little or no tooth reduction. The restoration
is also completed chairside in a single visit.
How long does the bonding procedure take?
Bonding is a fairly quick procedure, performed in only one office
visit in under an hour. Bonding of multiple teeth may require additional
time.
What happens during a bonding appointment?
During your tooth bonding appointment, you and your dentist will
chose a shade to best match your teeth. The dentist will then apply
a bonding agent to teeth, and apply the composite resin. The resin
is then hardened with a special light and polished.
