For some reason, root canals have gotten an undeserved bad reputation. Drs. Powell and Tiller and our patients who have had root canals always wonder why! A root canal is what makes a tooth that is hurting, feel better. We often have patients fall asleep during their root canals, even though we just use local anesthetic; they are not sedated. We think it is because sometimes their tooth has been bothering them to the point of not sleeping well, they come in, get anesthetized and are finally comfortable enough to doze off! Some patients just watch TV or listen to music during their appointments, but all are pleasantly surprised at how easy it was.
Endodontics (also called root canal therapy) is a procedure to remove the pulp (or tissue inside the tooth) to eliminate pain when pulpitis (inflammation of the pulp) has occurred. Drs. Powell and Tiller perform root canals on most teeth other than molars. Molars are more complicated and the doctors generally refer these to a specialist. The doctors work with specialists who are as gentle and pleasant as they are, though, so even the referred patients are very pleasantly surprised.
