Even with all the advances in modern dentistry, there is nothing stronger and healthier than your natural dentition, so maintaining your oral health and preventing disease has to be our first priority. Sealants, night guards for patients who grind their teeth, and regular dental checkups are all part of preventative care. Maintaining healthy teeth takes a lot of work, and although we love our patients, we’re thrilled when we only get to see them twice a year!

Routine Dental Examinations:

The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends that everyone visit the dentist twice a year for cleaning and thorough mouth exam. During your check-up, the dentist will deep-clean your teeth, administer fluoride treatments, remove visible plaque and tartar, and polish them. Your dentist will take necessary X-rays and monitor any problem areas. Regular check-ups are vital for catching minor problems before they become major ones. This leads to healthier teeth, as well as easier and less expensive dental visits.

Fluoride Treatments:

Fluoride is the best thing to happen to teeth since the toothbrush. Your enamel is a crystalline matrix which means the chemicals form a repeating geometric pattern to form a solid. The center of each repeating square contains an oxygen ion. Fluoride is smaller than oxygen and can substitute for it in the matrix. This “tightens” the matrix and makes it stronger. This tighter matrix also helps to decrease tooth sensitivity. We provide fluoride treatments with each 6 month cleaning for adults and children. So often we hear “I haven’t had a fluoride treatment since I was a kid!” Topical fluoride works exactly the same way on adults as it does in children, so as soon as adults stop getting cavities, we will stop offering fluoride treatments to adults.

Sealants:

We think sealants are the best thing to happen to teeth since fluoride! Sealants are a protective resin coating that can be placed over the biting surfaces of teeth to prevent decay in the grooves of these teeth. It requires no anesthetic as it is easy and pain-free. We simply clean the tooth and prepare the surface for the sealant, rinse, paint on the resin and shine a light on it for 20 seconds.

Night Guards:

Many people suffer from bruxism (grinding their teeth at night). This can result in fractured teeth, teeth that are worn down, sensitive teeth due to wear, head aches, or jaw pain. A night guard protects the teeth of patients with who suffer from bruxism while they sleep. Rather than damaging your teeth and jaw joints, the night guard absorbs these harmful forces, so that you can maintain your smile for years to come.

Preventative Care for Kids:

Don’t ignore the importance of dental care for children. Infant and child pediatric care is essential in ensuring that your child develops good oral health that will continue through adolescence and adulthood. The development of healthy baby teeth impacts the development of normal jaw bone and muscle development, eating development, speech development and the development of permanent teeth.
