Preventative Care Questions
Serving Austin, Round Rock, Texas And Surrounding Areas
How often should I visit my dentist?
The American Dental Association recommends regular check-ups with cleaning every 6 months for men, women and children.
What is the best way to brush teeth?
Use a soft-bristled toothbrush held at a 45-degree angle. Many find that using a circular or elliptical motion works best. Whichever pattern you use, make sure you are covering every reachable area of enamel. Also make sure you are reaching the spaces in between teeth and your tongue surface. A recommended length of time is about 2 – 3 minutes, twice a day. Follow-up with meticulous flossing. For impeccable hygiene, take your toothbrush to work and brush after lunchtime.
Who is at risk for developing cavities?
Cavities result from acids breaking down tooth enamel. The bacteria in your mouth (plaque) produce acids as they consume and use sugars from your diet. Therefore, you can reduce your risk of decay both by reducing the sugar content in your diet and by regular brushing and flossing to keep the bacterial count down in your mouth. Other acids can break down the enamel as well, which is why lemon-sucking is a bad idea. People who do not maintain regular home care and fail to have regular check-ups and professional cleanings are at a higher risk for tooth decay.
Who should get dental sealants?
Anyone who wants to prevent cavities from forming in the grooves of teeth. Although they are definitely recommended for children as they start to get their permanent teeth, they work just as well for adults. The doctors and staff here have all had sealants placed on their teeth too, we don’t want to get cavities either! The use of sealants can prevent dental caries from settling in and causing decay.
What can I do to protect my teeth at home?
To prevent cavities and keep your teeth and gums healthy, brush and floss regularly. Try to keep snacking to a minimum, and be sure to brush after eating sweets or sticky foods. Cavities typically form in hard to reach places where bacteria can collect. Pay special attention to these hidden spots when brushing and flossing.
