Teeth Whitening

Everyone wants a whiter smile. Due to this reality, teeth whitening is one of the most popular dental cosmetic treatments available today. With so many options, it is challenging to discover the optimal solution for each individual. Your teeth-whitening journey should commence with a consultation at Austin Family Dentistry. Here, we can examine all available options to determine which is optimal for your specific situation.

Teeth Whitening Options

As stated, there are plenty of options you may here when you decide that you’d like to whiten your teeth and give yourself a smile upgrade. Here are the popular options today:

Zoom in-office teeth whitening is the fastest way to your whitest smile. Similar to other methods, a whitening gel is administered to the teeth’s surface. The whitening agent is then activated by a light-emitting device to reveal a whiter, livelier smile. Whiten your smile up to 8 shades in less than 1 hour. We offer a fantastic bonus with the Zoom in office whitening. It also comes with Custom Whitening Trays to maintain your beautiful smile at home.

Custom Whitening Trays are a professional whitening procedure that bleaches the teeth using trays and a whitening serum, and is available at Austin Family Dentistry for take-home usage. A whitening gel is placed in custom-made trays that fit snugly over the teeth. As the peroxide-based substance decomposes, hydroxyl radicals whiten discolored teeth.

We offer “Ready to Wear” trays by Opalescence Go – Ready. Set. Go!

The advantage of tray whitening over whitening strips is that the trays encompass the entire mouth, so all of your teeth are whitened as opposed to only those that are covered by the strips. The customized nature of the trays can also contribute to their comfort.

Generally, tray whitening takes between 10 and 14 days, with some results appearing as early as 3 to 5 days.

Whitening strips have been an extremely popular teeth-whitening method for many years. They function using thin plastic strands containing a film of hydrogen peroxide. A strip is placed on both the upper and lower teeth and firmly pressed to ensure contact. Although more costly than paint-on alternatives, whitening strips are relatively inexpensive.

There are numerous options for teeth-whitening strips, with varying concentrations of hydrogen peroxide. This results in varying usage periods, with some being worn twice per day for 30 minutes, once per day for 15 to 20 minutes, etc. Depending on the concentration of the hydrogen peroxide, the duration of use could range from seven to fifteen or twenty days.

This option is a cost-effective, over-the-counter teeth whitening method: paint-on whiteners. This technique involves applying a gel to the tooth with a small brush or applicator. This gel forms a film that coats the teeth to provide a temporary whitening solution that dissipates in the mouth.

Due to its low cost, whitening toothpaste and mouthwash are the most popular whitening methods. However, they are also the least effective. Whitening toothpastes and mouthwashes employ moderate abrasives to remove surface stains, but they do not whiten the teeth themselves.

Teeth Whitening Benefits

At Austin Family Dentistry we believe in the A, B, Cs of teeth whitening benefits:

  • Appearance enhancer – white teeth leads to a more youthful and vibrant facial aesthetic.
  • Better first impressions – business meetings, interviews, and other first impression encounters have an increase in success with whiter teeth
  • Confidence booster – whiter teeth leads to minimized teeth-related insecurities and will give you that boost of confidence you need to take on the world

Teeth Whitening Risks

The major teeth whitening risk revolves around peroxide, the main ingredient in teeth whitening. If administered improperly or at too high of concentrations, peroxide can damage the cells of the gums, or even damage nerves, and connective tissue.
This risk is mitigated by using a reputable dentist such as those at Austin Family Dentistry. We safely administer teeth whitening in proper dosages to ensure successful whitening minimizing the risks.
