Austin Teeth Whitening FAQs
Serving Austin, Round Rock, Texas And Surrounding Areas
What type of teeth whitening treatment is
right for me?
Visit Powell & Tiller Dental Care for advice on which whitening
treatment can help you accomplish your goals. For most people, in-office
whitening treatments such as chairside laser whitening can brighten
teeth a number of shades. Some patients find that gradual take-home
whitening kits work best for them. For other patients, your dentist
may recommend cosmetic dentistry treatments like veneers or bonding to mask severe discoloration or staining.
What is involved with in-office teeth whitening?
During an in-office whitening treatment, your dentist will apply
a gel bleaching agent to your teeth for a short period of time,
usually 30 minutes to an hour. The bleaching gel works by removing
deep and superficial stains. You will either use custom-fitted trays
to hold the gel in place, or choose light-activated laser bleaching
for advanced teeth whitening.
Can I achieve the same results from over-the-counter
whiteners?
Over-the-counter whiteners can only contain a limited amount of
bleaching agent. Carefully monitored whitening treatment in your
dentist’s office will give you noticeably whiter teeth than
these inexpensive options. We even find that with the number of
times you have to use the “less expensive” over-the-counter
options to try to achieve desired results, they become as expensive
as having done it once, efficiently and effectively at the dentist.
If you choose to supplement your dental whitening treatment with
over the counter whiteners or whitening tooth paste, look for the
ADA Seal of Acceptance and make sure your dentist approves.
After teeth whitening treatment, how can I keep my teeth white
and bright as long as possible?
Taking care of your teeth can help you maintain your best shade
of white. Try to avoid coffee, tea, smoking, red wine, cranberry
juice, and other staining agents. Drinking staining liquids through
a straw can also help prevent staining. We encourage patients to
avoid abrasive toothpastes as well. Although a certain amount of
discoloration will occur with aging, maintaining healthy teeth and
gums can help keep teeth looking great.
Should I use a whitening toothpaste after my teeth whitening treatment?
You should not need a whitening toothpaste after treatment. If you
choose to purchase whitening toothpaste, keep in mind that some
brands use abrasive ingredients that can damage enamel. While they
may remove some surface stains, they do not offer long lasting whitening
effects.
Are teeth whitening treatments permanent?
While dental whitening treatments are more effective, produce more
dramatic results, and typically last longer than over-the-counter
options, the effects are not permanent, but with regular “touch-ups”
with your home trays and prescription solution, you can maintain
the beautiful initial results.
What are my options if I want permanently whiter teeth?
If you have severely discolored, stained, or damaged teeth, you
may want to consider porcelain
veneers. Veneers made of porcelain are placed on your real teeth
and shaped to your desire. You can also choose the exact shade of
white for your new veneers. If you have older dental work, you may
want to consider having your dentist replace metal fillings with
tooth-colored fillings.
